I use the "nosmartresize" tag so that the picture is not cropped within the article
However this also disable the crop on blog layout

You can disable creating thumbnails in article by setting a thumbnail size for an article to large number. In this case you do not need to use "nosmartresize" class. Also do not forget to delete old thumbnails after You change the size of thumbnails in articles in plugin parameters.
